KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) has launched a dedicated driver academy, the Driver Development Project (KCMG-DDP). Going above and beyond conventional platforms, the KCMG-DDP will mould promising young drivers and elevate them into the sensations of the future by utilising KCMG’s extensive global motorsport presence.
Founded in 2007 by Paul Ip, Hong Kong outfit KCMG has been committed to developing racing talent since its creation, forging formidable partnerships with iconic brands such as Porsche, Toyota, NISMO, Chevrolet, Honda and Oreca. Young drivers have had the opportunity to race and grow with the team through its wide range of racing programmes around the world, including single-seaters, GTs, touring cars, endurance and stock cars, and now aims to further boost that process with the introduction of the KCMG-DDP.
Since its inception, the team has reached significant milestones as the first Hong Kong squad to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship in addition to the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup in the US. KCMG momentously took victory at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 class, the first team from China to do so.
Proudly displaying the Hong Kong flag on its race cars and on numerous podiums around the world, KCMG and Paul Ip represented their country in the inaugural FIA GT Nations Cup in Bahrain in 2018 and at the event’s successor, the FIA Motorsport Games in Vallelunga, the following year. KCMG left an indelible mark in the sport as Hong Kong’s first and sole race car manufacturer after being awarded the tender to produce the ground-breaking hybrid KC MG-01 F4 chassis for the 2019-22 FIA Motorsport Games.
Current KCMG stars Alex Imperatori and Josh Burdon have both benefitted from the team’s dynamic nature, becoming integral parts of the outfit’s global GT3 programme, while Matt Howson utilised the experience to help KCMG to its Le Mans class win.
The KCMG-DDP will provide top level support for its members, supplying a dedicated driver and performance coach from the team’s impressive staff roster for mentorship. Off-track support will also be provided as driver fitness will be handled by an exclusive physiotherapist to ensure participants are performing at their maximum potential.
Other programme benefits include driver management and representation, as well as lessons in media and communications, including foreign language tutoring. Financial support is also provided, with entry fees, running costs and testing opportunities covered by the team.
The first KCMG Driver Develop Project member will be announced in the coming days.
PAUL IP KCMG FOUNDER
“KCMG has been at the forefront of Hong Kong motorsport since 2007 as a professional race team competing in some of the world’s most prestigious and challenging events. Our ambitions have always been high and the KCMG Driver Development Project is the latest addition to our extensive repertoire. We have a strong history of nurturing young drivers, as shown by the impressive line-ups in our various programmes. We are constantly looking for new opportunities and that mindset led KCMG to being more than just a race team when it became a full manufacturer in 2019. The KCMG-DDP comes from the same ethos and will be unmatched in its offerings to young talent. We are really looking forward to getting started with our first driver very soon.”
