TEAM KCMG CONTINUES SUPER FORMULA SEASON AT SPORTSLAND SUGO

Team KCMG returns to Sportsland SUGO this weekend for the fourth round of the 2021 Super Formula championship, aiming to build on its results so far this season.

After a difficult race at Autopolis last month, the Hong Kong squad aims to bounce back with a good performance at the 3.586km Sportsland SUGO, where Kamui Kobayashi secured a second-place finish for the team in 2019.

Yuji Kunimoto will once again be joined by Kazuto Kotaka, who stands in for Kobayashi with the Toyota driver fulfilling his duties in the World Endurance Championship. Kotaka will continue his rookie season, returning to a track where he took two podiums in the 2020 Super Formula Lights season.

Sportsland SUGO will provide a unique challenge for the drivers as the shortest circuit on the 2021 calendar, with lap times of just over a minute and elevation changes of 69.83m per tour. The track has been ever-present on the calendar of Japan’s premier single-seater series since 1987, spanning the Japanese Formula 3000, Formula Nippon and Super Formula eras.

The fourth round of the 2021 season is the last before a summer break for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Qualifying takes place on Saturday 19 June, with the race on Sunday 20 June.

#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO

“I’m really looking forward to taking on Sportsland SUGO, it’s a technical and difficult circuit to master. A high percentage of the lap is at full throttle, so it’s a very rewarding track to get right. My results this season haven’t been what I wanted, but I’m positive for the weekend and have been working hard with the team to bounce back and secure a strong finish.”

#7 KAZUTO KOTAKA

“I’m excited to stand in for Kamui at Sportsland SUGO. It’s a tough track to get right with the elevation changes and the high-speed corners. I feel more comfortable with the car every time I drive it, so I hope that I can continue to improve and hopefully secure my first points in Super Formula.”

RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT

“Sportsland SUGO is a great track, it’s quick, challenging and exciting to watch. The team and the drivers have been working hard at the factory for this event, so we are hoping for a good performance. We’ve had a few difficult races, but this weekend provides us with an opportunity to make up for lost ground.”
