Team KCMG is set for the return of Super Formula at Twin Ring Motegi following a two-month summer break, aiming for a strong second half of the season with its two Toyota-powered Dallara SF19.
The 4.8-kilometre Twin Ring Motegi will host both Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2021 championship before the season finale at Suzuka. Team KCMG has had success at the circuit in the past, finishing second in 2019 with Kamui Kobayashi. The former Formula 1 driver also set the race lap record on Super Formula’s visit last season.
The second weekend at Twin Ring Motegi replaced the originally scheduled event at Okayama, meaning the track hosts two races in Japan’s premier single-seater series for the first time since 2012. Consecutive races at the same circuit will give the team a rare opportunity to learn from one event to the other. With almost two months between the two weekends, the team will be able to analyse data and make any changes to the car before Round 6.
Kobayashi will once again be replaced by Kazuto Kotaka due to his commitments with Toyota at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. KCMG would like to congratulate Kamui and his team-mates for their incredible victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Kotaka, who was on the podium twice at Twin Ring Motegi in his 2020 Super Formula Lights season, continues his rookie campaign alongside full-season driver Yuji Kunimoto.
Qualifying at the Twin Ring Motegi will take place on Saturday 28 August, with the race on Sunday.
#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“We’ve all been working really hard in the long summer break to stop our run of bad form. We weren’t at the level we expected earlier in the season, but I’m confident we can put that behind us and focus on the last three events this year. The races at Twin Ring Motegi are usually very closely fought so we’ll give it our best to secure a strong result and leave the circuit with a smile.”
#7 KAZUTO KOTAKA
“I’m pleased to be returning to the team for this weekend’s event and thank them for the trust they have placed in me. I’m steadily growing in confidence every race, I’m getting used the car and finding my limits so I’m looking forward to seeing how this weekend goes.”
RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT
“The event at Twin Ring Motegi is a great opportunity for us to bounce back and score strong points after the two-month break. We know we have speed at the track, Kamui finished second here in 2019 and holds the race lap record as well. Yuji and Kazuto are working well as a duo and we are hopeful that they can both have strong weekends. Finally, the team would like to congratulate Kamui on his amazing victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s an incredible achievement and we’re very pleased for him.”
