Team KCMG is set to take on the final round of the 2021 Super Formula season at Suzuka this weekend, aiming to finish the campaign on a positive note.
Following his 10th-place finish on his return to the team at Twin Ring Motegi, Kamui Kobayashi is absent due to his WEC commitments with Toyota in Bahrain, meaning Kazuto Kotaka will once again fill in.
The Toyota junior took three podiums in three races at Suzuka in Super Formula Lights last season, and has already competed at the venue in Japan’s premier single-seater series, with KCMG earlier this year.
Kotaka teams up with Yuji Kunimoto, who stood on the podium when the series visited Suzuka in 2020 and took victory in 2016 on his way to the Super Formula title.
One of the world’s most loved circuits, Suzuka is unique on the Super Formula calendar as the only track to run in a figure of eight. The home of the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix is a favourite for drivers and fans alike, with incredible corners such as 130R, the Spoon Curve and the S Curves.
#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“The season has passed really quickly and I’m looking forward to giving it my all in the final race of the year. Suzuka is a great track and I have good memories there, so I’m hoping for a solid weekend. It’s been a short break since the last round at Twin Ring Motegi, but we will prepare for the race as normal and do our best to finish the season strong.”
#7 KAZUTO KOTAKA
“I’m filling in for Kamui again and I’m very excited to get back in the car. I think I will benefit from my previous Super Formula race weekend at Suzuka with KCMG earlier this year. I’m more confident with the car than I was before so I’m looking forward to being on track and doing my best.”
RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT
“It’s the final race of the year and we’re looking to finish the season well. Kamui is with Toyota in Bahrain for the WEC round, so Kazuto is back and we’re ready to push for a strong performance. It’s been a tough season for the team, but Suzuka is a track everybody is familiar with, so we’re aiming for points to end the year in a positive manner.”
