Team KCMG will travel to Suzuka Circuit this weekend for Round 3 of the 2022 Super Formula season, looking to build on Kamui Kobayashi’s points finish at Fuji Speedway.
Winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021, Kobayashi took ninth place in the second race of the season-opening double-header at Fuji earlier this month, and will return to the track where he stood on the Formula 1 podium back in 2012.
Teammate Yuji Kunimoto has also enjoyed success at the 5.807-kilometre circuit, claiming Super Formula victory and the title back in 2016, along with a podium finish for KCMG in 2020.
Japan’s most famous track features iconic corners such as the S Curves, Spoon Curve and 130R, and is a unique circuit thanks to its figure of eight layout. A driver’s favourite, Suzuka is fast, flowing and always produces great racing.
The 2022 campaign is the 50th year of Japan’s top open-wheel racing class, as well as the 10th under the Super Formula name. Qualifying for Round 3 of the season takes place on Saturday 23 April, with the race on Sunday 24 April.
#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“It’s not been long since the last race at Fuji, but we’ve been working hard and preparing well for Suzuka. I have good memories at the circuit, I won the title here in 2016 and was on the podium with KCMG two years ago. It’s one of my favourite tracks, so I’m looking to have a strong weekend and score points.”
#7 KAMUI KOBAYASHI
“We opened our account for the season at Fuji earlier this month, and we will be aiming for more at Suzuka. We only have one race this weekend, which will be easier for the team to manage. We’ve been preparing with the engineers so we can hit the ground running this weekend and hopefully secure a positive result.”
RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT
“We had a good pre-season test at Suzuka and Kamui was it the top-10 at Fuji so we’re hoping that we can continue to improve for this race. We’re looking to score points with both cars and challenge for the podium this weekend. It will be great to see the fans at Suzuka, it’s a special place to race, so hopefully we can put in a strong performance on track.”
