Team KCMG returns to the legendary Fuji Speedway this weekend for Round 6 of the 2022 Super Formula season, with the Hong-Kong squad aiming to build upon its top-10 finish at the circuit in April.
Kamui Kobayashi and Yuji Kunimoto showed strong pace last time the series visited Fuji, with ex-Formula 1 driver Kobayashi coming home to take ninth place and two points in the second race of the season-opening double-header.
In the previous round at Sportsland SUGO, 2016 Super Formula champion Kunimoto impressed in qualifying before finishing ninth, claiming his second points finish of the season.
Situated in the foothills of Mount Fuji, the 4.563-kilometre track boasts fast-flowing and technical corners such as 100R, Dunlop and Panasonic. The circuit is also famous for having one of the longest main straights in motorsport, with 1.475-kilometres separating the final turn and the first corner. Fuji Speedway hosted the first F1 Japanese Grand Prix in 1976 and has been ever-present on the calendar of Japan’s top-tier of motorsport since 2005.
Qualifying for Round 6 gets underway on Saturday 16th July, with the race taking place the following day, Sunday 17th July.
#7 KAMUI KOBAYASHI
“I’m excited to return to Fuji this weekend, since we had great pace here last time in April, and we’ll be hoping to build upon our points finish this time. It’s a really fun track to race on, and the long, sweeping curves in the first sector provide a real challenge before it starts getting tighter towards the end of the lap. Having won twice here in the World Endurance Championship with Toyota, it’s a circuit I know really well, so I’ll be pushing hard this weekend to finish strongly.”
#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“We had a solid race at Sugo and came away with points, so our aim for Fuji is to build upon that and continue to fight in the top-10. We’ve fine-tuned the car lots since we last visited Fuji, so I’m excited to see what our pace will be like. We’re returning to a circuit that is quite familiar to us as a team and one that I enjoy driving on. We’re looking to put in a good performance on Sunday.”
TSUGIO MATSUDA TEAM MANAGER
“As we head to Fuji for the second time this season, we’re working towards continuing the improvements we’ve made since the start of the year, and we’re hoping to be competitive with both cars. We had a positive performance with Kamui here in April, and Yuji’s ninth place in Sugo shows we are capable of scoring points regularly, so it’s all about putting everything together and making sure we’re in the mix for the top-10. The team is looking forward to returning to this incredible track, and we’ll be working hard to come away from Fuji with another positive result.”
