Kids com Team KCMG rounded out an excellent 2024 Super Formula campaign with a podium finish in the second race of the season-ending double-header at Suzuka International Racing Course.
Following the fantastic showing at Fuji Speedway last month, the squad was looking to continue that form in pursuit of a best-ever result in the Teams’ Championship.
Nirei Fukuzumi extended his points-scoring streak in the first race of the event with a solid sixth place, while a penalty saw Kamui Kobayashi classified in 14th.
On Sunday, Fukuzumi was aiming to end a strong first year with the team in style, and lined up fifth on the grid. After picking up a position with a stunning move around the outside at Turns 1 and 2, Fukuzumi hunted down third place and snatched it with another great overtake on Lap 2. Solid work from the crew in the pits meant the 27-year-old remained third after every driver had stopped, giving the team its third podium of the campaign and ensuring a best-ever fourth placed finish in the teams’ standings.
Meanwhile, after a frustrating qualifying that saw him start in 17th, Kobayashi ran long on the first stint, passing rivals with the superb strategy to clinch a point in 10th.
Super Formula returns to racing action for the 2025 season with another double-header at Suzuka kicking off the 12-race campaign, on 7-9 March 2025.
#8 NIREI FUKUZUMI
“I’m delighted to finish this season with another podium, continuing from our brilliant weekend in Fuji. The improvement we’ve had since we last raced here in March has been amazing, and shows how hard everyone has worked to achieve this. I’m happy to clinch sixth overall in my first season with the team, and also pleased that with Kamui we could help Kids com Team KCMG to their best ever Super Formula finish in the Teams’ Championship.”
#7 KAMUI KOBAYASHI
“We had a great race car once again which allowed me to fight back from a tough qualifying to end my season in the top-10. Even though I’ve scored points in all but three races, the goal next year will be to compete closer to the front. It’s brilliant to see Nirei on the podium, and I’m so happy we were able to deliver fourth place in the teams’ standings too.”
RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT
“We’re thrilled to secure another podium with Nirei, helping us to claim fourth in the Teams’ Championship! It was great to see both drivers in the points during the second race and finishing off a great 2024, where we’ve continued to improve throughout. A big thanks to everyone in the team, our partners, suppliers and fans for their work and support this year and we’ll now review this campaign and strengthen ourselves ready for 2025.”
