FIA Japanese F4 ‘s season opener witnessed KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) complete its first two races with James Munro and Yuki Nemoto demonstrating strong form on Okayama’s 3.703km track over the weekend. Both drivers displayed impressive pace as they tackled the new Japanese formula series’ opening races, which underlined a highly competitive 32-car grid.
The first half of the qualifying run was held in wet conditions with Munro and Nemoto delivering top lap times. However, the session’s second half saw both drivers struggle on a drying track and were unable to secure positions at the front of the starting grid. Munro had to settle for 15th and 14th position for Races 1 and 2, while his Japanese teammate qualified in 20th and 19th place.
The championship’s inaugural race witnessed the 18-year-old New Zealander get off to a blistering start and moved several places up the field during the opening lap. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire due to a collision, which damaged his car’s front wing during the second lap. The incident also collected Nemoto’s car, as he was trailing behind Munro and was also an early casualty.
Race 2 was held in wet conditions on Sunday morning and saw both drivers make a strong comeback after delivering impressive drives in the rain. Munro, who was in 14th position on the starting grid, fought his way up to the front of the field and crossed the finish line in 4th place. After a thrilling battle with opposition, Nemoto wrapped up the race in 12th position after starting from the back of the grid.
James Munro: “It was great to be able to have a strong race on Sunday and collect some points after a tough Saturday. We know that we have the potential to be fast as we showed in Race 2. Hopefully, we can continue this form for the next round at Fuji”
Yuki Nemoto: “It was a trying weekend but overall, a productive and encouraging one. The car’s pace is very good and we’ve delivered positive results during the second race on Sunday. I’ve learned so much about the new car over the weekend and I can’t wait to be back in it at Fuji!”
Ryuji Doi, KCMG Head of Motorsport: “FIA Japanese F4’s opening event has been a huge success and the team is happy to be part of this new national championship. I’d like to commend James, Yuki and the entire crew for the job well done over the weekend. To come away with points is a good result for the team and we’re keen to carry over this positive momentum to the next round at Fuji!”
