KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) concluded Asian Formula Renault Series’ second event with two commanding victories at Sepang International Circuit over the weekend. The Hong Kong-based squad’s dominant outing on Malaysia’s Formula 1 track was underlined by BlackArts Racing by KCMG driver Dan Wells and Garnet Patterson’s outstanding performances.
KCMG was off to a strong start after delivering good results during Friday’s free practice sessions. The team went on to qualifying with Wells grabbing pole position for Race 1 and second position for Race 2, while Patterson secured fifth place on the starting grid for both races. On race day, pole-sitter Dan Wells persevered to defend his position and scored a peerless lights-to-flag victory. Meanwhile, Patterson finished Race 1 in second position after fiercely fighting his way through the field from fifth place.
Sunday’s race was held in scorching conditions, which presented a new obstacle for both drivers. Despite this challenge on Sepang’s highly demanding configuration, Wells and Patterson pulled off another 1-2 finish, highlighting the British driver’s overwhelming lead over the rest of the field and his Australian teammates’ superb overtaking in the thrilling 10-lap affair.
Garnet Patterson: “I would like to thank KCMG and all my supporters for their hard work over the weekend. We had good speed in practice but a poor qualifying put us on the back foot all weekend. To come from 5th to 2nd in both races wasn’t what we had hoped for, but it was still a smart points haul towards the championship – meaning after 4 podiums in as many races, we now have the championship lead and the focus will now be on securing two race wins at the next round in Zhuhai.”
Dan Wells: “Firstly, I’d like to thank BlackArts Racing by KCMG for the fantastic car they’ve given me this weekend. From first practice, we worked together throughout the weekend to keep improving which led to our haul of maximum points at Sepang. Motorsport can be a tough sport so when you have a weekend like this, you have to enjoy it! I’d like to thank my other sponsors Prestige, CTPS and Start JG for their support and I am looking forward to Zhuhai already.”
Kevin O’Hara, AFR Team Manager: “Dan and Garnet displayed outstanding prowess throughout the weekend and this result is a testament to how strong the team is. Every one contributed to this victory and we’re looking to build on this momentum in the races ahead.”
Garnet Patterson currently sits on top of the driver standings with 102 points, followed by Dan Wells in second with 90 points. Asian Formula Renault’s third event will be held at Zhuhai International Circuit on June 19-21. To find out more about the series, visit www.frdsports.com/en/AFR
