KC Motorgroup Ltd.’s (KCMG) sole driver Yuichi Nakayama continued to show good form in the premiere Japanese race category Super Formula. The seven round championship visited the Oita Prefecture this time around, racing at the Autopolis race circuit. The weekend didn’t start out too well for the 2013 All Japan Formula 3 champion as technical problems forced Nakayama to miss out on valuable track time in Free Practice. As a result, the young Japanese KCMG driver qualified at the back of the field – a grid, which included a star studded cast of ex Formula One drivers such as Kamui Kobayashi and Narain Karthikayen.
Sunday morning warm-up gave a glimmer of hope for Yuichi Nakayama and the Hong Kong-based squad as the Super Formula driver placed his KCMG Elyse SF14 Toyota R14A in the top five of the time sheets. Handicapped by his starting position in the race, Yuichi Nakayama was able to get off the line smoothly as the green lights went off and was able to stay away from trouble on the opening laps. Amidst multiple safety car periods, the Japanese driver displayed impressive control of the his blue and white SF14 and completed the 54-lap race in nineteenth place.
Yuichi Nakayama: “It was a trying race for me and the team but given the circumstances I am happy knowing that we had a lot of potential to be in the top ten. I made sure that I drove consistently and finished the race in order for the team to be able to gather important data for the next round which is in Sugo, a track that I love driving in.”
Ryuji Doi, KCMG Head of Motorsport: “Due to our poor qualifying performance, we decided to take a gamble on our strategy by calling in Yuichi early. Unfortunately, our gamble didn’t work and we missed an opportunity to score points at Autopolis. We take the positives from this weekend and we now look forward to Sugo where we’ve always displayed good pace in the past.”
