CMG had a superb outing in Inner Mongolia as Dan Wells and Akash Nandy delivered strong results in the second event of Formula Pilota at Ordos International Circuit. Wells secured pole positions and a double victory for the team, taking the championship lead in the series.
Following their successful first event in Shanghai, KCMG headed to Ordos in a confident mood ahead of Rounds 4-6 of the championship with Wells and Nandy driving Formula Abarth cars.
Both drivers were consistently towards the front throughout the duration of the event. Starting strongly during pre-event testing, Wells finished 2nd followed closely by Nandy in 3rd.
Wells rocketed to pole position during Q1 while Nandy took an impressive 4thposition despite this being his first Formula Pilota event. During the second qualifying session, Wells slipped to 2nd position while Nandy took 6th.
Showing intrinsic talent on the circuit, Wells impressively finished 14 laps with the fastest time, comfortably leading Race 1 and taking his maiden win in the series. Meanwhile, teammate Akash Nandy was enjoying a strong Formula Pilota debut as he ran 3rd for 9 laps until contact with another car dropped him to 7th position.
The team returned to a damp circuit on Saturday morning for Race 2, with Wells finishing 3rd after leading 4 laps in wet/dry conditions while Nandy secured 8thposition. During Race 3, both drivers consistently challenged at the front which resulted in another exhilarating win for the 21 year old British driver. Wells started 2nd and overtook Antonio Giovinazzi on the last lap of the race, ensuring the series’ championship lead in the process.
Nandy concluded his successful debut by finishing 4th during Race 3. The 15 year old Malaysian driver expressed his satisfaction over his first Formula Pilota weekend in Ordos. Nandy states, “I’m satisfied with my debut Formula Pilota event. We were competitive right from the first practice session and although I was a little unlucky in races 1 and 2 we proved in race 3 that we have the pace to fight right at the front.”
While Wells strengthens KCMG’s chance to contend for the championship title, the British driver inches closer to the coveted spot at the Ferrari Driver Evaluation Academy if he finishes at the top by the end of the series. Ecstatic over his significant achievement in Ordos, Wells quotes, “I’m absolutely delighted to take KCMG’s first and second victories in the Formula Pilota Championship. We are leading the championship which is a testament to everyone’s hard work and I’m looking forward to coming back to Ordos for the next round of the championship.”
KCMG Deputy Managing Director John O’Hara expressed his satisfaction over the weekend’s results. O’Hara states, “It’s been a great event for us. The complete team put in a big effort so far this season and we will continue to do so as we have some very tough competition. Dan was faultless all weekend and Akash has shown that if he returns we will have two cars fighting for race wins.”
The team is looking forward to the third event of Formula Pilota which will again be held at Ordos International Circuit on August 17-19.
