KCMG claims first Super Formula podium at Motegi

KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) scored their first Super Formula podium finish when Kamui Kobayashi came home second after a dramatic outing at Twin Ring Motegi over the weekend. The Japanese ace drove a perfect race as he led for 34 laps while setting a 14 second gap at the front of the field in the Toyota-powered #18 KCMG Elyse SF14.

The Hong Kong-based outfit went from strength to strength as they produced impressive results at the 4.801km circuit. Saturday’s qualifying session, which was interrupted due to torrential conditions, commenced the following day and saw Kobayashi place the blue and white #18 entry in second place. It marked KCMG’s first front row start in the Japanese formula series.

Sunday’s 52-lap race then witnessed Kobayashi get off to a perfect start and took the lead from the first lap and held his position until Lap 34. Unfortunately, a massive setback during his final pit stop lost him valuable time, which ultimately cost the lead. After a fierce attempt to retake the top spot, Kobayashi crossed the finished line in second place – scoring KCMG their first ever podium in Super Formula.

Kamui Kobayashi: “Overall, it was a good weekend as everybody in the team worked extremely hard over the past few months and this result proves that we have a package that can win. Frankly, it wasn’t the result that I was aiming for as I was gunning for victory but still, it was satisfying to be able to provide KCMG with their first podium in Super Formula. It was a hard race and we still have a lot of work to do but this result is a positive step forward.”
