KCMG displays winning speed at Motegi Super Taikyu round

KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) once again displayed winning potential during the five-hour Super Taikyu endurance race at Motegi en route to a strong points finish in sixth.

Team founder Paul Ip and Intercontinental GT Challenge driver Josh Burdon put the Honda Civic Type R TCR FK8 fifth on the grid, with a combined time of 4:09.948.

Following a competitive opening stint from Ip the #501 machine was handed to Burdon an hour into the race. A poorly timed safety car period during the Australian’s run unfortunately meant the team fell a lap behind the leaders as 2000 Asian Touring Car Series champion Henry Lee Jr. took over driving duties.

Emerging in seventh, the Hong Kong racer pressed on and drove an impressive 90-minute stint, ploughing through the hot conditions, before Burdon continued the mighty recovery drive to sixth at the end of the five-hour event.

KCMG now looks ahead to the final two rounds of the inaugural TCR Japan championship with the Civic Type R before the Super Taikyu finale at Okayama on 9-10 November.

Josh Burdon: “A fun but disappointing end to our Super Taikyu experience at Motegi. Bad luck with the strategy during a safety car took us a lap down after the first two hours, which made the race very difficult. It’s a shame because as a package we had the speed to win. Thanks to my team-mates Paul and Henry and to the team for their great work.”

Henry Lee Jr: “It was my personal record driving a 90-minute stint in extreme heat. I very much enjoyed the race and the Honda Civic Type R had strong pace and reliability. Although the strategy did not go our way it was a hugely enjoyable event.”

Paul Ip: “KCMG demonstrated good pace at Motegi, enough to be within a chance of victory. Unfortunately, we were unlucky with the timing of the safety car which dropped us down the order, making the remainder of our race extremely challenging. We’re hoping to get the result the team deserves at the Okayama finale.”
