carrozzeria Team KCMG heads to Twin Ring Motegi for the opening round of the 2020 Super Formula season with Kamui Kobayashi and Yuji Kunimoto.
For the first time the Hong Kong squad will enter two Toyota/TRD-powered Dallara SF19 cars in Japan’s premier single seater championship and is doing so with a formidable driver pairing. Despite the series being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team has prepared heavily for the return to racing.
Kobayashi enters his fourth season with carrozzeria Team KCMG after scoring two second-place finishes in 2019. Behind the wheel of the #7 machine, he aims to build on a strong campaign having taken two podiums in the previous three Motegi races.
2016 series champion Kunimoto may be a newcomer to the team but is already well integrated onboard his #18 car. He too boasts an impressive record at the 4.8-kilometer venue, with a double victory in his Japanese Formula 3 title-winning season.
The Super Formula curtain opener from Motegi takes place on 29-30 August.
Kamui Kobayashi: “It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m going to be back with carrozzeria Team KCMG for the Super Formula season. It’s been a long wait, but we’ve been using its time wisely in preparing for this year and hopefully alongside Yuji we can score some good results.”
Yuji Kunimoto: “I can’t wait to make my race debut for carrozzeria Team KCMG. It’s a great moment for them, fielding a second car for the first time and we all have high expectations. I look forward to hitting the track at Motegi.”
Ryuji Doi, KCMG Head of Motorsport: “We’re very excited to finally get underway with Super Formula this season, especially as this campaign marks our first with a two-car entry. Our line-up is incredibly strong and, combined with our preparations during the hiatus, we believe this will translate into good results.”
