SGC by KCMG heads to the southwestern region of Japan as the 5th event of Japanese Formula 3 gets underway in Okayama Circuit on August 25-26. The team looks forward to stronger results after an electrifying race in Motegi which produced another significant victory for Irish driver Gary Thompson.
Thompson and British teammate, Matt Howson sees Rounds 9 and 10 of the competitive Japanese series as an opportunity to move up in the point standing. Howson, who missed the first event in Suzuka, stands 6th while Thompson takes 3rd place overall in the National class. Both drivers are hopeful that the upcoming race would still give the team a shot to contend for the championship title.
A technical circuit, the Okayama track runs 3.70km and features 13 turns which will test the drivers. The circuit has hosted some of the notable motorsport events in Asia, namely Formula Nippon, Super GT, FIA World Touring Car Championship and the Formula One Pacific Grand Prix where Michael Schumacher dominated in 1994-1995.
SGC by KCMG is eager to get Thompson and Howson to test the newly modified cars on Friday. KCMG Japan General Manager Ryuji Doi has been working round the clock with the team in preparation for the series’ 5th event of the 2012 season. Doi states, “We are happy with how the boys are performing and we see that both Gary and Matt are very determined to score points for the team. Our job now is to make sure that they are provided with the best cars that effectively work for them on the circuit. We are definitely looking forward to a great weekend.”
Gary Thompson, who has now secured one victory in the season, is happy to be back in Japan after a 3-week break from racing. “We are going to try and improve the car from how it was in Motegi. We hope to build on our strong performances in the last few race weekends. From the overall pole in Fuji to the win last time out in Motegi. We will be hoping to challenge for pole and wins this weekend also.”
Meanwhile Matt Howson is also looking forward to the upcoming race weekend and has maintained his positivity despite the challenging outing that he previously had in Motegi. “Last weekend in Motegi was a difficult weekend as we struggled in the high-temperatures, which we will see a repeat of in Okayama this weekend. However we made a crucial discovery with the setup of our car, and the first opportunity to try a new package is this weekend, and I am cautiously optimistic. The F308 is a very competitive car, we just need to unlock it’s potential in N Class regulations, so the weekends will inevitably be up and down! My team has worked so hard so I wish to reward them here in Okayama.”
