carrozzeria Team KCMG looking to build on momentum in Sugo

carrozzeria Team KCMG aims to build on its momentum from the previous round of the 2020 Super Formula Championship, where the team secured its first points of the season, as Japan’s premier single-seater series heads to Sportsland Sugo for round three.

After a challenging start to the campaign at Twin Ring Motegi, 2016 series champion Yuji Kunimoto scored a seventh-place finish at Okayama with a storming drive from a lowly grid position. Both he and team-mate Kamui Kobayashi are eager to make it a double points finish this weekend. Kobayashi returns to the #7 car after his 24 Hours of Le Mans duties with Toyota (and subsequent quarantine, as per the Japanese government’s COVID-19 travel guidelines), doing so at a track where he scored one of his two 2019 podiums.

The Sugo circuit is one of the fastest on the calendar, with its 3.586-kilometre layout largely comprised of high-speed corners, including a long, bumpy, sweeping right-hander to round out the lap. The elevation change of almost 70m only adds to the spectacle.

Qualifying and the race for the third round of the 2020 Super Formula Championship will take place on Sunday 18 October.

Kamui Kobayashi: “It’s great to be back in Super Formula, especially at a track where I had a great result last year with the podium finish. There have been a few format changes since my last race, with the return of the mandatory stop and tweaks to the overtaking system, so I’ll need to get myself up to speed but that’d shouldn’t be a problem. I look forward to getting out there again with Yuji.”

Yuji Kunimoto: “This is the first time this season we’re going into the weekend with the same rules and format to the previous event, so hopefully this means we can build on the good result we took at Okayama. Sugo is a fantastic track and I think we can put on a good show for the fans.”

Ryuji Doi, KCMG Head of Motorsport: “It’s great to have Kamui back in the #7 car and we’re certainly excited to get going as he was second at Sugo last year. We had a great race with Yuji last time out so hopefully we can have both cars in the points this weekend. We have some stability in the format now after some early tweaks which is good news and we’re eager to be racing again.”
