Team KCMG travels to Suzuka this weekend for the second round of the 2021 Super Formula season, aiming to repeat its 2020 success at the Japanese Grand Prix venue.
The Hong Kong-based team scored its best result of 2020 at the world-famous track, with Yuji Kunimoto taking third and Kamui Kobayashi fourth. Kunimoto will again be joined by Kazuto Kotaka, standing in for Kobayashi for his second start in Japan’s premier single-seater series while Kobayashi is absent due to his WEC commitments with Toyota.
In addition to his podium finish in 2020, Kunimoto has had other success at Suzuka in the past, taking victory at the circuit in 2016 as he clinched the Super Formula title, along with two other appearances on the rostrum.
Toyota junior Kotaka showed some promising speed in his Super Formula debut in Fuji earlier in the month, reaching the second part of qualifying. The 22-year-old showed his ability at Suzuka in Super Formula Lights last year, taking podiums in all three races.
The Super Formula event at Suzuka takes place on 24-25 April.
#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“Suzuka is one of my favourite circuits on the Super Formula calendar, so I’m really looking forward to getting out on the track. We managed to score our best result of the 2020 season here, when we took third place and I have many other great memories at this circuit. The team was fantastic last time out in Fuji with the strategy and the pit stop, so my goal for the weekend is to improve on my result here from last year.”
#7 KAZUTO KOTAKA
“I’m really excited to jump back in the car for my second Super Formula weekend. I learnt a lot at the opening round at Fuji and I’m looking forward to driving this car on the amazing Suzuka circuit. I had a good weekend here last season, taking three podiums in three races, so I’m aiming for a better performance than in Fuji and hopefully finishing in the points.”
RYUJI DOI KCMG HEAD OF MOTORSPORT
“We had our best race of the 2020 season at Suzuka so I’m hopeful that we can replicate that this weekend. Yuji is always strong at this track so we will try to give him the best car possible to allow him to fight right at the front. We were pleased with Kazuto’s progress on his debut in Fuji. He performed well at Suzuka in Super Formula Lights last year so we believe he has the pace needed to score his maiden Super Formula points this weekend.”
